Pinpointing demand
Our environmental program design work for MasterCard began with collecting and analyzing data on customer interest in travel and expense carbon reporting. The finding that a large majority of MasterCard corporate customers saw value in automated sustainability reporting via existing account interfaces confirmed the need for a new program.
MasterCard's transaction database contains a treasure trove of structured data
Identifying opportunity
Many business systems contain data that can be processed to extract sustainability insights. For MasterCard corporate T&E cards, existing transaction data on flights, hotels, rental cars, and other purchases in the Smart Data account managment system can readily be used to generate footprint insights using Brighter Planet impact models.
Brighter Planet's Greenback app shows the concept in action
Proving the concept
To investigate and illustrate how we would apply CM1 to card transactions we built Greenback, a simple app that uses our carbon and models to perform real time impact calculations for a variety of purcahse types, based on a sample bank statement.
Brighter Planet built a special "dispatch server" that translates between MasterCard servers and our CM1 platform
Technical integration
Integrating Brighter Planet CM1 into MasterCard's SDG2 platform required custom translation software to relay data between the two systems. We built this dispatch service to sort and format incoming transaction data from MasterCard and return specialized carbon reports from Brighter Planet, while maintaining finance-grade data security.
