Producing, distributing, and preparing a meal takes a lot of energy, but the environmental impact doesn’t stop there. The combined impact of kitchen waste — from wrappers and cans to kitchen scraps and leftover food — adds up to over 25 pounds each week for the average American family. How you deal with the waste you generate is important. Saving and eating leftovers, reusing and recycling waste materials, and sending food scraps to the compost bin are all great ways to divert waste from the landfill and recycle it back into the system as a valuable product.
